Determining the Need for Assistive Technology

Module Objectives

pencilThe following models and tools will be described in this module:

Education Tech Points (Bowser and Reed, 1995)

Student, Environment, Task and Tools (SETT) (Zabala, 1995)

Matching Person and Technology (MPT) (Scherer, et. al. 2002)

Human, Activity, Assistive Technology (HAAT) (Cook and Hussey, 2002)

Lifespace Access Profile (Williams, et al., 1995).

Models and Tools

Several models and tools have been developed to support and guide the process of determining whether an individual might require assistive technology. (In our context, a “model” is a framework of terminology and concepts that makes solution of a problem more systematic.)

Some of these are commercial products while others are free to download from their respective websites.

Each of them includes a focus on the factors related to the individual and his or her environment that must be addressed before thinking about any specific assistive technology devices.
